While Bob is new to Greystone, he is a veteran of the Baltimore County Golf system, having worked at several of our facilities. Check out this brief Q&A to get to know Bob a bit better.
Q: Tell us about your background working in the golf industry?
A: My first job in the Baltimore area was at Rocky Point Golf Course in 1995. In 1997, I started the PGA program while working there. In 2000, I worked at the Country Club of Maryland as a golf instructor. I earned my PGA membership in 2002. From 2004 until 2012, I worked at the Woodlands and Diamond Ridge as a pro. I’ve been teaching for over 15 years and have experience in a wide variety of instructional techniques, including video analysis.
Q: What are you most looking forward to about working at Greystone?
A: Greystone has first-class facilities, a beautiful course and a wonderful staff. What more could you ask for? I’m excited to build off of Greystone’s past success to provide guests with a wonderful public golfing experience at a great value. I also feel there is a lot of potential for growth in our outing business because Greystone is a perfect venue for all types of events and we take pride in accommodating groups ranging in size from a few people to several hundred.
Q: What do you think sets Greystone apart from other golf courses in the area?
A: The customer service is outstanding. You get treated so well from the time you enter the driveway until you leave. Our employees assist guests with their golf bags, put them on the cart, and even clean their clubs after their round. Our rangers are knowledgeable and polite and do a great job of helping our guests keep the pace of play. Greystone truly offers a “country club” experience. The layout of the course is world-class, featuring a lot of elevation changes, dramatic bunkering, undulating greens and a lot of gorgeous views!
Q: Do you believe there are any misconceptions golfers have about Greystone?
A: Many golfers think that Greystone is an extremely difficult course. However, this is not the case. At Greystone, we have five different sets of tee locations, allowing the course to be playable for golfers at any skill level. Many of the fairways are wide and are not tree-lined so you don’t get penalized too bad if you miss the fairway. Also, the greens are relatively large and easy to hit, you just have to keep the ball below the hole.
Q: When did you start playing golf?
A: I started playing golf when I was 12 years old. My friend asked me to play and at first I was hesitant because I played other sports and was not sure if I would be any good. I ended up shooting a score of 128 in my first round! What got me hooked was that I knew there was so much room for improvement. That was my motivation to keep practicing because if I put my mind to it, I knew I could get a lot better at golf.
Q: What is your most memorable moment as a golfer?
A: Coincidentally, two of my best moments in golf happened at Greystone! In 1997, right after the course opened, I aced hole #12. It was my first hole-in-one ever! Greystone gave me a plaque with my name and a picture of the hole on it. One month later, I came back to Greystone and made another hole-in-one, on the same hole, using the same club – a 7 iron!
